Thank you for inspiring me to create this blog!
Shortly after my daughter was born, I created an Instagram, instagram.com/the_pro_dad, to document my favorite moments. Since then I have received positive feedback and welcomed stories from others around the world. As a proud new father, husband, LLC owner, and musician this is the perfect time to start sharing personal experiences with my friends, family, and the new network of fellow Cougars at Washington State University.
Running a small business is hard work, parenting is even harder. I hope through my sleepless nights to inspire others to take a chance on themselves, reach for their dreams, and help each other along the way. I plan to share useful parenting tips, as well as, tips for escaping the 9-5 grind. After graduating with Honors from Columbia College, accumulating thousands in student debt and working several jobs, I figured, like other millennials, that a lucrative salary job was just around the corner.
Working in construction, retail, customer service, operations, marketing, and sales for several fortune 500 companies, I grew sick of just being another cog in the wheel of inevitable automation. I worked hard to exceed corporate expectations on paper, but the feedback I received from leadership was to “trust the process” when it came time to discuss my career advancement or a pay increase. To translate, this always meant stay in your lane, kid. Just be happy you have a job…
To change my fortune, I decided that I was going to start teaching myself skills that my employers could not, or would not. Through the use of free and low-cost online media sites like lynda.com, youtube.com, codeacademy.com, etc. I was able to learn new skills from professionals around the world. 2019 is a great time to be alive as others across the globe are accessible with just a few clicks of the mouse.
As a musician, topics of exploration included music production and audio engineering. From a novice recording demos on a cassette tape player, I am now a professional in music composition and engineering navigating popular software programs such as Logic X, Ableton, and Garageband with ease. You can hear me jamming at soundcloud.com/helloamericans or soundcloud.com/phoenixdownrock. Success in self-learning audio recording and production provided confidence in exploring more lucrative corporate topics such as data analytics, web development, and coding. I was able to use my skills to become the first domestic Data Analytics professional at a Klas top rated middleware company and eventually start my own LLC.
Anything is possible if you’re willing to take the time to learn new skills and be open-minded about new experiences. Failure to learn new topics is scary, but not trying can be even more frightening. If you struggle with learning an internal question, never fear, the internet has now provided all new types of ways for people to learn. Everybody absorbs information differently, and just because you fail to understand a topic on the first try, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t search a different media platform for answers. Many of my questions, both as a parent and entrepreneur were answered by 1-minute YouTube videos rather than hour-long lectures. Follow along as I share tricks and experiences to surviving and thriving in the ever-changing technological world.
